So many horses that I'm asked to help with struggle with boundaries & respecting the human's personal space. It can be easy to overlook this when they're small foals & you're encouraging their curiosity, but when they get a bit bigger & more confident it can become a serious safety issue. Teach them to respect your personal space (both in front & behind) from a young age & stay consistent about it. Drive & draw are two fundamental ways we communicate with our horses through our body language & suggestion. Over the training process we should aim to have the horse respond equally to these cues, so that it's just as easy to drive them away as it is the draw them in. Drive must be in place first (for safety reasons), but draw will be a key ingredient for anyone looking to do liberty work or for those who just like a horse who comes to meet them at the paddock gate.
